Libby and Overdrive

What is Libby?

Libby is an app that is available in the Apple App Store, Google Play, the Amazon App Store, and at libbyapp.com for Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks. With the Libby app, you can checkout e-books and audiobooks to read or listen to on your device.

What is Overdrive?

Overdrive is the company that created and maintains the Libby app and the database of books available on the app. They also have apps for movies (Kanopy), teaching resources (TeachingBooks), and student reading (Sora).

How do I log in?

Open the Libby app. Click on “Yes, I have a library card.” Search for the Gering Public Library. When it comes up on the screen, click on it. Then click “Sign in with my card.” Then select “Gering Public Library” again. This will allow you to enter your card number (on the back of your card beneath the barcode). Once you do that, it will ask for a PIN, which is your last name.

How long can I checkout books for on Libby/Overdrive?

Checkouts for e-books and audiobooks are for two weeks. You are usually able to renew them unless they’re on hold for someone else, it is too early to renew the item, or the book is no longer in the catalog.

What does it mean if there is no option to borrow the book I want?

That means the book is currently checked out by someone else. You can place the book on hold and when it has been returned, you will be notified.

How many books are available on Libby?

The Libby catalog has a large number of titles available. There are nearly 40,000 e-books, over 26,000 audiobooks, and over 5,000 magazines available for checkout.

How do I find the title I want?

You can use the search bar at the top of the app to look for a specific title or author. You could also select from a number of different filters to narrow your search to the format of the material, the subject of interest, the intended audience, the language, the availability, and the way in which you want to read it. You can also sort by popularity, date added, release date, title, author, and random.

Does the Libby app have a cost?

No. The Libby app is completely free. You only need to have an active library card in order to use it.
